"There was a time when silence was
normal and a lot of racket disturbed us. But today, noise is the normal
fare, and silence, strange as it may seem, has become the real disturbance". -
Henri Nouwen.
What is fascinating about the quote is that it was spoken in 1972 - long before cell phones, Internet, text messaging, streaming music and movies, etc. We've learned to distract ourselves with noise and drown God out but a quick review of history tells us that we *always* do that. We will always find a way to make something more important than God. The latest fad, gadget, or trend will make us feel like it is the most important thing in the world (even if only for a brief moment). Scripture tells us in Ecclesiastes 1:9 - "What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun." Please work hard to remind yourself of that as you go through your life. The worst thing that could happen to us is that we let things get in the way of our relationship with Him. That relationship is your sustenance - you cannot properly survive without it. My prayer for you is that you would spend your life connected to the Vine.
